Overview
The Importer–Exporter Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. It is required for businesses and individuals engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India.An IEC is needed to:
• Clear customs for import and export shipments
• Send or receive foreign payments
• Avail benefits under India’s Foreign Trade Policy
Once issued, the IEC remains valid for a lifetime, unless suspended or cancelled by the authorities. No import or export activity can be carried out without a valid IEC, except in cases specifically exempted by the government.
